Chuck Mangan:

Chuck Mangan began training horses professionally at the age of 17. As a young child, he rode primarily hunters and jumpers, but as a teenager he was drawn to the world of western riding. After college, he was operating a public training facility in Arvada, Colorado, which catered primarily to Quarter Horses and Paints. Although he gave lessons to several different clients who owned Arabians, it wasn't until 1978 that he attended his first Arabian show at the request of one of his clients. Before long, he had a few Arabians and Half-Arabians in training and was exhibiting them throughout the state. By 1982, he was training Arabians and Half-Arabians exclusively, operating Longs Peak Training Center in Longmont, Colorado, and Mangan’s horses and riders were accumulating Regional and National titles at shows all over the country.

Although he exhibits many open horses in English, Western, and the Hunter disciplines, Mangan’s barn is noted more for its amateur and junior program. Mangan’s amateur and junior clients regularly attend U.S. and Youth Nationals and are often among the Top Ten in their divisions. Mangan is noted for his patient and compassionate approach to both horse and rider. He never rushes a horse along just to get it in the ring, and is diligent about teaching basic fundamentals of horsemanship to his riders. His program is very "hands on," especially for his junior riders. While he "fine tunes" his students (both equine and human) by training and instruction, much of the lunging, grooming, and prepping of each horse is handled by its rider. He tries to instill knowledge, confidence, and competency on the part his young riders in all areas of horsemanship.

In addition to training and instructing, Mangan judges several horse shows each year. He first earned his judging license in 1983, and has judged major Arabian shows in just about every region in the U.S. and Canada, including several assignments at the prestigious Scottsdale All Arabian Show and both the Canadian and U.S. National Championships.

In addition to holding his Arabian card, Mangan is a USEF Licensed Official in four additional breeds or disciplines including NSH, Morgan, Western/Western Seat Equitation, and Reining. Mangan also earned both his NRHA and PtHA (Pinto) judging cards.

On the political front, Mangan is the Immediate Past Director of AHA Region 8 and is also the Immediate Past President of the Colorado Arabian Horse Club. He serves on several AHA Committees including Hunter/Jumper, Working Western, Youth, and the Futurity Commission. Additionally, he holds positions on the AHA Ethical Practice Review Board and the Education and Evaluation Commission. Mangan also sits on the board of the Colorado Horse Park, site of the 2008 FEI North American Young Riders Championships.
